Timing is everything. Younger sites may sell, however, older sites may
have a hard time too. Mazimize your profits by knowing the sweet spot.
Routinely we get listings from webmasters who have owned their sites
for a small period of time (anything under a year). Some are realistic.
Most are not. Some come to us with four months of stats and want to
make a hundred thousand dollars. We wish we could make that much
money too :)
Even if a site is profitable over a short period of time, that profit
could be considered an anomoly by some buyers. After all, website
patterns come and go and if your site doesn't show any fluxuations then
you have to wonder, when will the fluxuations occur? Knowing how
profitable a site will be isn't only dependant on successful times,
but also periods of lull. How long do they last and how do they
recover.
If your site is young and is sucessful, either in traffic flow or sales
flow, then we suggest holding it so you have at least a year of stats
to show buyers. It will increase your bottom line.
Now, does this mean that age absolutely matters. No. It's not a rock solid
variable. Some short-term sites are great values. Some have been
designed so well that their success is indeed a green flag pointing what will
happen next.
But older sites (3+ years) are better right. Yes and no. With older
sites you get more stats and more results to look at. However, things
on the internet are very competative. Chances are the older a site is,
the more webmasters have copied whatever niche the site originally wanted
to cut out. Make sure to check what the competition is up to on older
sites.
