Alexa rating comes into play. One wouldn't think Amazon.com could
affect your website, but it now does. What did we say, Amazon.com? Yep.
The same company that controls the book market is inching into the
search engine business. And its doing it so quickly, you might as well
call them Google 2.
So all you need to do is sell books to make things right, correct? Well,
no. Alexa is a rating system that tracks
how popular your site is in relation to a number of factors. Some are more
obvious, some are hidden and known only to the Alexa gurus. The most well
known factors are (1) website popularity (2) website linking and (3) traffic
flow.
Website popularity is just what it sounds like. How many people like your
site and for what reasons. This is closely related to website linking. There
was a time when a website was just a website. You did not have to worry
about the billions of other pages on the internet. But not today. Everything
is related and everything is linked. The success of one site has
relevance over the success of your site.
Do other webmasters link to your site? They should. At least if you want
to get Alexa's attention. Go around and ask other webmasters to link to
you. And of course offer them a link on your site as well. It will help
both parties. But its not quite that simple. Links need to be relevant and
in high traffic areas. If you are a fish store and your incoming links are
all from a pizza site, Alexa wouldn't find much relevance in them. Also,
if the links are on sites which don't get much traffic, Alexa will never
hear about them.
Target your links on sites that are relevant to yours but not exactly like
yours so you don't make deals with the devil. Another good method of doing
this is to link to yourself if you own multiple sites. Why go out and try
to hunt down interested webmasters if you have 20-30 websites yourself that
you can use.
The third major factor is traffic flow. How many people visit your site.
That is pretty much self-explanatory.
Now...what is this Alexa rating anyway? Its a number that Alexa assigns
to rank your site in comparison to every other site out there. Not quite
a fair comparison in our opinion, but what is one to do? Alexa considers
rankings of 100,000 or higher to be very relevant, and thus they track them closely.
We consider rankings of 500,000 or higher to be very relevant because these
sites have the ability to eventually reach 100,000 if they are managed
correctly.
To get your Alexa rating, goto alexa.com and enter your domain name. you'll
notice a few links to Amazon.com...wink wink.
